Board Adopts Change in GPA Calculation for Incoming 9th Grade Students

At the May Regular Meeting of the Weatherford ISD Board of Trustees, the school board adopted a change to Board Policy EIC(LOCAL) that will change the calculation for Grade Point Average (GPA) for students entering the ninth grade in 2017-2018. This change equalizes the point value assigned to courses that may lead to college credit for students, specifically Pre-AP (Pre-Advanced Placement), Advanced Placement (AP), and Dual Credit (DC) courses.

Due to the growing interest in the Dual Credit pathway and the addition of the Collegiate Academy, a committee was formed in the fall of 2016 to give further review to the weighted grading system currently defined in Board Policy EIC(LOCAL). This committee evaluated the current Board Policy and made a recommendation to the school board to consider equal grade point weighting for Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Credit courses.

GPA is often a major driver when students are selecting courses, especially when they are selecting an AP or DC course. This change permits dual credit courses to be weighted equally with AP courses, allowing students to earn college credit by choosing courses that align with their interests and future goals without negatively affecting their GPA.

Weatherford ISD is proud of the variety of course offerings that allow students to earn college credit. The Ninth Grade Center will host a parent meeting in May to address questions and will also provide opportunity for students to make schedule changes, as needed.
