10 Ways to Prepare for the First Day of School

Parents will high five and kids might groan…but regardless students return to WISD on Monday, August 22nd. Until then you have a few more days to have fun and get prepared for what promises to be an exciting 2016-2017 school year. Here are some tips to assist both parents and students for the beginning of a new school year.

1. Purchase School Supplies

Make plans to head to the store tonight to get all the supplies your child will need. Let your child pick a few of the items to get them excited for the start of school. High school students should bring a paper and pen/pencil for the first day.

2. Set Your Goals

Whether it’s to make the honor roll, the basketball team, first chair, or perfect attendance…the odds of hitting your goal(s) increase significantly if written down.

3. Finish Summer Reading

Don’t panic…this doesn’t apply to everyone! However, if you had a summer reading list or other assignments to complete over the summer now is the time log off Snapchat, find a comfortable spot, and get to reading!

5. Back to School Outfit

6. Get in a Routine

Let’s be honest, some of us (all of us?) sleep in during the summer months. Go ahead and start going to bed and waking up at the times you need to on Monday. This will help your body and mind make the needed adjustment.

7. After School Routine

Having a morning routine is important but some could argue that an after school routine is just as vital. Get in the habit of knocking out homework and other activities as soon as you get home. This will free up time for family conversation and extracurricular activities. Great habits are started on day one.

8. Lunch Meals

Proper nutrition and good grades go together like chips and salsa...Ok, that’s not the most

9. Route to School

First day of school traffic can be a little crazy so expect some delays on the road. Leave a solid 15 minutes earlier than usual and be mindful of school zones! The first day of school can be stressful for everyone and running late because of traffic will not help matters! Also, be informed of the drop off and pick up procedures for each campus.

10. Get Familiar with New Controlled Entrances

Our campuses have a new look with the controlled entrances that are a result of our 2015 bond election. When you enter our campuses this year, you’ll notice the reception and office areas have been redesigned, and in some cases relocated, to incorporate a controlled entry for increased safety and security. There’s still a bit of work to be done, so please pardon our dust!
