WISD Teachers Recognized For Summer Initiatives

Weatherford ISD teachers are constantly going above and beyond the call of duty. While they officially returned to work this week many of them worked countless hours over their summer “vacation” to ensure children in Weatherford ISD have a world-class education. These teachers were recognized at the August School Board meeting.

Weatherford High School teachers Bobbye Moreno and Cody Dotson, took the initiative to begin our first TSA (Technology Student Association) organization this last year. With their leadership WISD was able to take 21 students to state competition in the spring. This summer Bobbye attended the National TSA Conference the last week of June to learn more about the organization so she can get more students involved this new year. She judged and graded 79 resumes and cover letters in order to determine 12 finalists. Because of Bobbye going the extra mile our students will become even more successful in future TSA competitions.

Wright Elementary librarian, Kelly Hall, was recognized for organizing a library experience for our students living in the Horseshoe Bend neighborhood. She coordinated a schedule with teachers; so that at least one teacher from Wright was at Horseshoe Bend during lunch almost every day those meals were served. Kelly was there weekly. None of this would be possible without the support of Belk Department Store. They donated over $3,000 to Wright last year and they applied some of that money toward the purchase of books for our mobile library.

For the past 3 years, Austin Elementary ELA teacher, Susan Newton has been the driving force behind the Center of Hope’s Camp Hope program and she also coordinated a program to take books to our students in Lake Country. Camp Hope is a Center of Hope outreach program. During Camp Hope, the children learn to fix a healthy meal, read, produce a craft, swim, play games, and socialize with mentors. With Susan’s leadership Austin Elementary collected children books and met with the Lake Country families every Wednesday in July.

Shawna Ford was the librarian at Curtis Elementary but has taken a new position with Weatherford ISD as the Coordinator for Future Ready Learning. Before school was out, she’d already planned to open the Curtis Library four times during the summer to Curtis kids. When Kim Scoggin was named the librarian at Curtis over the summer, she immediately joined in along with two of our teachers who helped all summer – Amanda Rogers (Curtis and WISD elementary teacher of the year) and Jessi Medlin. In addition to being able to check out books, our students were offered the opportunity to engage in the MakerSpace section or participate in summer learning groups.

Weatherford ISD truly has the most amazing teachers who continue to make our community a great place for children. We are looking forward to seeing all of the amazing things that happen in the 2015-2016 school year.
