Martin Elementary Teacher of the Year - Carrie Bosco

“I struggled myself in mathematics as a student, and that struggle shaped the way I approach my curriculum and instruction,” she said. “I keep in mind my weaknesses and share them as often as I can with my students. My goal is to build a safe environment at the beginning of each year so that students will feel comfortable in taking risks.

“Math is a puzzle that nudges us to solve it, whether we have the tools necessary or the stamina to try is another question altogether,” she added. “ I ask students questions about everything from solving a simple managerial task to a complicated three-step word problem. I am a facilitator of autonomous thinking. You might hear me use these phrases several times a day… ‘Thank you for taking care of your learning!’ or ‘Do you have a plan to solve your problem?’”

Bosco said that she realizes as a teacher, and as a mother of two daughters, that we will not always be there to solve problems for our children.

“The more we give them safe, risk-taking opportunities, with us present, the more confident they will be to tackle the problems of the future,” she said.
