“We essentially turned into a class of reporters,” Rose said. “The students read nonfiction texts and paraphrased them into mini ‘news stories.”
Students also focused on using their own words to describe the topics, while still maintaining logical order and meaning.
“They all worked so hard and did an amazing job,” Rose added. “We definitely have some future journalists at our school.”
Some excellent paraphrasing examples by Austin Elementary fifth graders (a.k.a. reporters) are listed below:
WEATHER
“Waterfalls Freeze: At a temperature of -30 degrees Fahrenheit, even large bodies of water (including waterfalls) start to freeze. In February, the cold and wind froze Niagara Falls, which is in New York and Ontario, Canada. The once free-flowing water froze so solidly that it turned the famous waterfall into large lumps of ice. This is due to the temperature reaching such extreme lows.”
