WHS cosmetology provides 'Merry Makeovers' benefiting Texas Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders of Weatherford

The center’s patients started by sampling the delicious creations of treats and punch prepared by the culinary students and served by Emily Norris. Once the patients had sampled the hors d’oeuvres, they were pampered with manicures, pedicures and facials by WHS cosmetology classes. As soon as the patients were finished with their makeovers, they were offered the opportunity of having their Christmas portraits taken by WHS’s multimedia student Rafaela Torres against a pink and turquoise background, complete with a pink Christmas tree trimmed with turquoise and silver ribbons and Christmas balls. Patients were dressed in pink Santa hats to complete the look for their portraits. Through another of Torres’ classes, graphic design, she created the flyers for the event as well as the invitations that were sent out to the patients. Both Cosmetology I and II participated in this community service project that was organized this year by Linda Force, Chaynee Melton and Ashley Seydler, all three junior WHS Cosmetology Skills USA students.

It was a memorable evening for all participants. Soon after the mani/pedis began, patients, students and staff were singing Christmas carols and enjoying all of the festivities that this special night held. One of the students’ teachers, Jennifer Pool, brought her mom, a patient at the center, and her daughters to the evening even more moving for the students involved. It showed them just how important it was to make an impact on these ladies.

The WHS cosmetology program facilitated the community service project, and expressed its gratitude to the other WHS classes involved. The cosmetology students worked hard, holding two customer day fundraisers to raise the money needed for food, photo booth accessories and the makeup and supplies needed for the makeovers.

The cosmetology classes of WHS participate in several community service projects throughout the year, including the Wright Elementary Back to School Fair in August, giving haircuts to students that may not be able to afford them; providing the Parker County Senior Center members with haircuts and manicures free of charge; the Curtis Elementary Chili Cookoff, giving free haircuts to students in need; and updo’s, hairstyles and manicures to WHS students that attended the Special Education Dance a few weeks ago.
