Many gifted teachers and her own educational experiences influenced her decision to become a teacher, and so, during her junior year in college, she changed her major from accounting to education and never looked back. At TCU, she was fortunate to have professors in her math and science education classes that incorporated the use of hands-on, student-centered learning. These professors influenced her use of this best practice in the classroom.
Baker added that it’s a blessing to be in a profession that is exciting, fulfilling, and never dull.
Following her college graduation, Baker began her teaching career at Curtis Intermediate School and was assigned to a teaching team made up of strong academic, loving, and caring teachers. Each had unique talents that helped her make the transition from college to the classroom. She learned the essentials of a good teacher and the qualities of a good faculty member.
Through the years, Baker’s passion for teaching continued to grow.
“Nothing is more rewarding than the look of confidence on a student’s face when learning is taking place,” she said.
Each morning Baker reminds herself that her words and actions have the power to impact each of her students in a positive or negative way. Her goal every day is to have a smile and a kind word for each one.
