“The desire to become a teacher began when I was in elementary school,” she said. “When it was time for college, I never considered anything else. Looking back I realized that the teachers I remember most were either very compassionate or very strict which is interesting because I have been described by parents as ‘firm but fair.’ I like that label because I want my students to know that I care about them, but I also want them to know that my expectations do not waver.”
Gift also said the teaching field was definitely the right career choice for her.
This is my life’s work and it is indescribably valuable. There is no question that this profession is stressful and time consuming…but it is also incredibly rewarding. My most significant contribution to education is when I am effective in helping children grow academically, socially, and emotionally. It is always my goal to make connections with my students and establish a relationship from the start. I truly love teaching, and after 23 years, I can honestly say that I am excited to see my students every day.
