It all started when this team of students created an event to compete in the FCCLA Event Management category. Event Management is an individual or team event for students who apply skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences courses to plan an event and prepare a researched proposal for an educational institution, community or non-profit organization, business, or government institution.
“Blind Date with a Book” takes place at an elementary library and involves pairing 2nd and 3rd grade students with books and high school reading buddies with a goal to increase the motivation of elementary students to read. This event was planned entirely by these students, including the budget, resources, volunteers, and venue.
Their journey to the national competition began at the Regional level where the team placed 2nd. Next, they advanced to the state competition held in Dallas where they took 2nd place and earned the right to compete at the national conference in San Diego, CA. At the national competition, they took 10th place overall and received a silver medal during the State Awards Ceremony for their rubric scores in the overall competition. Join us in congratulating these students and their sponsor, Mrs. Giles.
